The 7 IELTS Trap Types That Cost You a Band (And the 8-Week System That Fixes Them)

The short version: most candidates stuck at IELTS band 6.5 don't have an English problem — they have a traps problem. Misspelled completion answers, uncountable nouns wearing an -s, TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN answered from your own knowledge, a Task 1 with no overview. This post covers the trap types that quietly cost bands, the 8-week system that fixes them, and the prep kit I built from it.

Why IELTS Self-Study Stalls at 6.5

Most people stuck at band 6.5 don't have an English problem. They have a traps problem. A completion answer spelled "accomodation" costs the full mark in Listening — spelling is assessed, not forgiven. An uncountable noun quietly wearing an -s. A TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN question answered from what you know instead of what the passage says. A Task 1 chart with no overview sentence.

None of those are language failures; they're format failures. The same pattern shows up in Duolingo English Test prep: first-time test-takers lose minutes to platform setup and room-scan rules, not to English either.

The Missing System: An 8-Week IELTS Study Plan With a Feedback Loop

Random practice tests with no feedback loop is what most self-study actually looks like. Two things fix it.

First, a written 8-week IELTS study plan: skills work for three weeks, a full mock at week 4 to reset priorities, three more weeks targeting the two weakest skills, then a final mock and a taper in week 8 so you arrive fresh, not fried.

Second, a score log. Record every session result so your two weakest skills — and only those — decide what you drill next. Include the official rounding rule while you're at it: a raw average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. That's how you know your real overall band instead of guessing at it. (This whole system is the one I built my own self-study around; a 7.5 overall with Listening 9 and Reading 8.5 is one person's result, not a promise — it's simply where the system was born.)

IELTS Trap Analysis: The Catalog Worth Drilling

Three trap families do most of the damage. Spelling traps in completion tasks. Paraphrase traps — the passage says "declined sharply," the question says "fell slightly," and that one adverb flips the answer. Distractors — a real number from the passage that isn't the answer to the question actually asked.

The IELTS True / False / Not Given Strategy, in One Rule

  • Facts stated in the passage → TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
  • The writer's opinion → YES / NO / NOT GIVEN
  • If the passage neither confirms nor contradicts the statement → NOT GIVEN (not FALSE)

Answering from your own knowledge is the most expensive habit in the entire test.

IELTS Spelling Mistakes: The Cheapest Band to Reclaim

The kit treats spelling as an engine, not a margin note. A 40-word master list tracked through three statuses — new, daily, perfected. A daily list that rebuilds itself with yesterday's re-test words first. Dictation drill sheets so you practice under the same pressure as the Listening test itself. Of everything in the kit, fixing completion spelling is the single cheapest band to reclaim per hour spent.
